On Saturday March 22, 29 year-old Kelly from Yorktown had four free dental procedures done at Norge Dental Center. “Y’all are nicer, more gentle, and overall better than any dental work I’ve had to pay for in the past. I love you guys! I’m getting back in line now to get a filling” said Kelly after her first service, a cleaning. Kelly was just one of the 261 members of the community—which extended from Louisa County to Moyock, North Carolina—that took advantage of this annual event.

When interviewed about their experiences with Dentistry From the Heart, we found that a number of the patients in line were previous Dentistry from The Heart patients from years prior. Of the many reasons they returned, one that we heard the most was that the staff at Norge Dental Center and the many other volunteers from participating dental offices were the nicest they had encountered. Many of the patients remembered some of the volunteers from the event, snapping photos with old friends recognized in and out of the line. “It’s sort of like a family. We’re all here for the same reason and everyone’s so nice” said one of the patients in the waiting area.

Post procedure interviews were just as heart-warming as speaking to the patients in the waiting area. A young woman came out of her cleaning beaming, showing off her beautiful smile. When asked how everything went, she said she would definitely be back next year—“It’s a great facility, you don’t feel cramped up even though there are tons of people here… I had a great hygienist, a great time and I’m really surprised at how organized everything was!”The patient response was overwhelming; many of them thanked the staff and volunteers with tears in their eyes. Not only did the extended community enjoy the event, but the staff also found joy in getting to know these wonderful people. After being a first hand witness to the interactions, smiles, conversations, and results, it was very clear that the event could not have had a better name.  It really was Dentistry From the Heart.
