“If you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. This is how I feel about dentistry. It’s fun, it’s fulfilling, it’s perfect for me.”Dentistry has been on Poonum’s mind since she was 4 years old. From making her own makeshift braces with chewing gum as a child to volunteering in dental offices in high school, she always knew she wanted to be a dentist. The delicate balance of art, science, and education is what fuels her love for dentistry. She spends time educating and discussing procedures with her patients, ensuring they have a good understanding of ways to improve oral health. Her philosophy of treating every patient like she would like to be treated is the foundation and core of her patient care.
“I strive to provide my patients with the utmost care and respect and make them as comfortable as possible in my chair.” Using nitrous gas or oral sedation medication, Dr. Poonum is able to provide that extra comfort to those who have dental anxiety.Dr. Poonum Bharal, a native of Virginia, received all of her education in her home-state. She graduated from the University of Virginia, earning a degree in Chemistry, with a specialization in Biochemistry. She then fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a dentist at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. During her duration at VCU, Dr. Bharal focused her time on learning the intricacies of dentistry and patient care, conducting research on periodontal disease at the Phillips Institute and teaching undergraduate students eager to enter the profession of dentistry. Her passion for these areas is evident in the numerous academic and research related accolades she received, including a national ADA research award, the Pierre Fauchard Academy research award and the senior Endodontics award. After graduating from dental school, Poonum and her husband, Kevin, moved to Maryland where she practiced for several years and started a family before returning to Virginia. Dr. Poonum is an active member of the dental community, belonging to several study clubs, local, state and national dental organizations. Volunteering her time and knowledge, she finds joy in helping others of all ages through local organizations. She is here to listen to you, and to help you with all of your dental needs and looks forward to getting to know you.
